Puri: On Thursday, a woman reportedly perished after drowning in floodwaters in the Puri region of Odisha.

Babina Maharathy (39), the daughter of Bahadur Maharathy of the Rahanggorda panchayat in the Gop block, has been identified as the deceased.

Sources claim that Babina had left early in the morning to respond to nature's call. She was pushed by a strong rush of water when she into a nearby overflowing canal to wash herself.

Babina was discovered drowning in floodwaters by the neighbours, who then rescued her and took her to Nimapara Community Health Center (CHC). But the CHC's medical staff declared her to be dead.

It is important to note that numerous blocks in the Puris district have been impacted by floods in the Daya, Bhargavi, Kusabhadra, Ratnachirta, Luna, and Makara rivers as a result of the ongoing severe rainfall. The following blocks: Astarang, Gop, Delang, Kanas, Nimapada, Pipili, and Puri Sadar were the ones most severely impacted by the water.

On August 22, a fracture in a canal embankment resulted in the flooding of about 10 villages in the Satyabadi and Gop regions. Nua Kholamara, Kalia Pokhari, and other localities in the Gop block were affected by the floodwater.
