Bhubaneswar: With former president of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Rahul Gandhi, slated to meet with the party's nine MLAs in New Delhi at 6.30 p.m. on Monday, a decision on new leadership for the Odisha chapter of the Congress is likely to be made soon.

Niranjan Patnaik, the incumbent president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), and Narasingha Mishra, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), left for New Delhi on Sunday. Separately, another group of Congress leaders, including former OPCC head Jaydev Jena and eight MLAs, went for the capital.

Niranjan confirmed that a decision on the future OPCC president will be made at the party leaders' meeting, saying that it cannot be postponed any longer because he is no longer willing to serve. "I offered to leave in 2019." It's been on hold for quite some time."

According to sources, Mohammed Moquim, a Barabati-Cuttack MLA, and ex-MP Sarat Patnaik are the frontrunners to succeed Niranjan as OPCC president.

The MLAs are also expected to meet with Rahul to discuss tactics for reviving the Congress in the state ahead of the 2024 elections.

On April 26 and 27, A Chellakumar, the AICC in-charge of Odisha, held multiple rounds of consultations with senior party leaders here on the likely prospects for the new OPCC president.
