Bhubaneswar: Students in Odisha's School and Mass Education department have been told that offline attendance is not required in schools and that they can opt for online lectures.

"School attendance is not compulsory, and students whose parents refuse to send them to school can opt for e-learning," an official from the Odisha State Education Programme Authority (OSEPA) told TNIE on Sunday.

After a COVID-19 epidemic in two state hostels, the decision was made.

According to the official, students who are unable to attend physical classes can use the Diksha portal and other online platforms to access e-content.

Odisha reported a massive rise of 71 cases on Sunday, with 64 illnesses confirmed from Rayagada alone, amid fears of a possible fourth wave. This is the state's greatest number of cases reported in a single day, after reporting only 8-15 new cases each day for the previous one and a half months.

Official reports say 44 inmates of the 'Anwesha' hostel in Kotlaguda and 20 female students of Hatmuniguda government high school in Bissamkatak block have tested positive for the virus.

Rayagada Collector Saroj Kumar Mishra explained that the two COVID clusters were discovered during random testing. "Samples are being submitted to RMRC, Bhubaneswar, for re-testing because the students remain asymptomatic," he said.
