Sambalpur: On Thursday, vigilance officers detained a state government official who had accepted a Rs 20,000 bribe in Samablpur, Odisha.

The Vigilance Department laid a trap after receiving an allegation that Bhagirathi Kharsel, a junior clerk in the Joint Labour Commissioner's office in Sambalpur, was asking for Rs 20,000 from a labour contractor to issue a licence valid for 55 workers.

According to the plan, the complainant proceeded to offer Kharsel the bribe. The Vigilance sleuths nabbed the junior clerk red-handed when he was taking the payment. The entire bribe sum of Rs 20,000 was taken from Kharsel's possession and seized.

The Vigilance began simultaneous searches of Kharsel's properties at 2 sites in the Sambalpur district as a result of the trap from a disproportionate assets (DA) aspect.

In this regard, Sambalpur Vigilance has filed a case under the PC Amendment Act, 2018 and further investigation is ongoing.
