Bhubaneswar: On Sunday night, a major fire broke out in the Odisha State Medical Corporation (OSMC) godown in the Mancheswar Industrial Estate area of here.
The blaze, which started around 11:30 p.m. and damaged the entire warehouse, reduced medicines and other properties worth lakhs of rupees to ashes. The surrounding area was engulfed in thick, billowing smoke. However, no casualties or injuries were reported.
"On the 9th of July, 2023, an accidental fire broke out at Mancheswar MARKFED Godown number 3 late at night." This godown housed some OSMCL supplies (PPE kits, sanitizers, and empty cylinders). All goods are covered by insurance. The fire was put out quickly by the police and fire departments. "There were no injuries or fatalities," the health department stated on Twitter.
It took around seven hours for the Fire Service Personnel, who rushed to the scene with seven fire-fighting vehicles and water tankers, to extinguish the flames. To gain access to the building, they had to use a JCB machine. According to sources, the warehouse's walls were breached, preventing the fire from spreading to other areas.
Though the cause of the fire has not been determined, an electrical short circuit is suspected to have caused the accident.
