Puri: Work on the silver cladding of the Singhadwar of the 12th century shrine has begun while the sibling deities of Shree Jagannath Temple in the Odisha pilgrim town of Puri are on their annual pilgrimage to the Gundicha temple.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) is responsible for the Lions Gate's silver cladding. Wooden frames for a temporary door to be installed at the Lions Gate for ritual purposes have been prepared. The project has begun with the installation of iron frames for temporary doors.
Following that, the brass-clad doors of the Singha Dwara will be removed and replaced with new Burma teak doors clad in silver.
According to sources, the 15-foot-tall Singhadwar will be adorned with approximately 525 kg of silver donated by a devotee.
Adequate precautions are being taken to ensure that the door's original design is preserved. Singhadwar is the first of the shrine's four outer gates to be clad in silver. The doors will be designed in accordance with the Utkala art tradition.
