Keonjhar Collector Appears Before National Tribal Panel

Bhubaneswar: On Thursday, Keonjhar Collector Ashish Thakre appeared before New Delhi's National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) member Ananta Nayak's court.

The NCST had issued an arrest warrant for the collector after he failed to reply to a summons to appear before it in connection with tribal affairs concerns. The national tribal panel had directed the DGP to "arrest and summon" Keonjhar collector before the commission in New Delhi in a letter titled "Warrant of Arrest of Witness."

The order was halted by the Orissa High Court, which stated that it is of "prima facie conclusion that the Commission has exercised power beyond the scope and bounds of the Rule, 2021."

"It is also made clear that the pendency of the writ petition shall not bar the Commission from proceeding in the inquiry involved, if any, and if it falls within its domain to reach a conclusion even in the absence of the Collector providing right of submission to the Collector's representative on appropriate notice," Justice Biswanath Rath's single-judge bench added.
