Berhampur: In the Ganjam district of Odisha, tension erupted in Madhipalli village under Kabisuryanagar police limits on Thursday when the wife of one of four people, whom the villagers had imprisoned on suspicion of sorcery, allegedly suffered a beating to death and reported the incident to the police.

The deceased has been identified as Rajendra Nahak, wife of Tunu, who was picked up by the locals the night before when he had a dip in the Baghua river. They also kidnapped three other people before attacking them viciously.

However, Nahak was able to escape their grasp and was saved by police, who subsequently helped him get admitted to Aska Hospital. Later, Tunu reported the incident to the police.

In the meantime, two police platoons arrived in the village to save the other three but were met with resistance from the locals, sparking a confrontation. However, they were eventually saved and brought to the same hospital for treatment.

The media was informed by Tunu's son that a meeting was held in the community on Wednesday night to discuss magic rumours. According to reports, a young person had previously used their names and accused them of doing black magic while claiming to be possessed by a spirit.

Then the townspeople attacked them, forcing them to flee the village for their life. On his return to the village this morning, he discovered his mother deceased.

"After her husband was attacked, Tunu reported the incident to the authorities. Infuriated by this, the villagers beat her to death, according to Purusottampur SDPO Rajnikant Samal, who also added that the body had been found and was being sent for a postmortem.

Two police platoons have been deployed in the meantime to stop any unwanted incidents. Over 50 women were hauled to the police station for questioning, while all the men fled the village out of fear of being arrested.
