Balangir: Two members of a family are reportedly dead and about 25 others are unwell in Balangir after diarrhoea spread to the districts of Rayagada, Koraput, and Kalahandi in Odisha.

According to reports on Monday from the western Odisha district, diarrhoea has spread quickly to Dedarha village in the Patnagarh sub-division of Balaingir's Khaprakhol block.

More than 25 villagers have been stricken by the water-borne illness, and two have already died as a result. The Patnagarh Sub-Divisional Hospital is providing care for about ten rural residents.

According to officials, the sick individuals were identified as Kumari Meher, 48, and her 10-year-old grandson Bablu Meher.

A special medical team visited the village on Monday to assess the situation and set up the necessary precautions to stop the disease from spreading further as the number of affected people continued to rise.

Khaprakhol Community Health Centre (CHC) In-Charge Suraj Kumar Deep stated that the team has checked about 40 villagers so far and concluded that the affected individuals' conditions are stable, while two people have passed away as a result of the illness.

He stated that several individuals with critical conditions had been admitted to hospitals and that the ailment was thought to have been brought on by contaminated water. After the Nuakhai festival, he claimed, eating stale food may possibly have contributed.

He added that actions were also done to raise awareness among the populace regarding the need to maintain hygiene. Samples of water and food are being sent for analysis, and water sources in the area have been sanitised.

After the illness had claimed the lives of at least four persons in three panchayats in the Kalahandi district, reports of the ailment spreading to Balangir were made.

In the Jeypore block of the Koraput district, at least 16 persons experienced diarrhoea last week. Additionally, the disease has spread to the Dasmantpur, Bariguma, and Laxmipur blocks, each of which had 30 to 40 patients.

In the past, the illness has claimed the lives of 10 persons in the Rayagada district's Kasipur area.
