160 Inmates of Jharapada special jail appearing for exams
Bhubaneswar: Following the Odisha government's desire to educate the offenders, up to 160 inmates of the high-security Jharapada jail in Bhubaneswar are taking various tests ranging from Class X up to PG.
A total of 60 inmates—including a woman—are taking the class X exam, while ten others—some of them are female—are writing the Plus II exam. Two prisoners are taking Post Graduate (PG) exams, according to reports from Monday.
According to them, these tests are being administered by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), and Odisha State Open University (OSOU).
As many as 45 prisoners are enrolled in BA, BCom, and MA programmes through IGNOU, while 25 more are enrolled in BA, BBA, GA, and MA programmes through OSOU. They said that sixty prisoners were registering for various NIOS exams.
The IGNOU exams will end on September 5, the NIOS exams will end on September 6, and the OSOU exams will end on September 30.
A number of prisoners from other prisons, including those in Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Angul, and Khurdha, are also travelling to the Bhubaneswar Special Jail to take the exams in addition to the inmates of the Jharapada jail.
The exams are given in the penitentiary twice a year, and 150 inmates have signed up to take the ones scheduled for December of this year. In 2021, 80 inmates took the exams, according to sources
Teachers from various educational institutions also visit the prison to teach the inmates, in addition to the one instructor the government has hired to teach at the jail. The prisoners are given books, notebooks, pens, and other supplies for this, they noted.
